Many people living in Nelson House have relatives or friends that were raised at this Original Settlement. Some of the original family names were Spence, Hart, McDonald and Flett. Before the flooding by the Churchill River Diversion Project, this settlement was attached to the mainland and the water around the settlement was very shallow and full of wildlife and waterfowl. The families were able to hunt and fish. In the warmer months, the children walked four miles to the south shore of Footprint Lake. There they were picked up by Elders in canoes and taken across the shore to the main settlement to go to school. In winter they would use sleds to get across the Lake.
